Mitchelton Wines (Goulburn Valley) – Mitchelton’s “Airstrip” is constantly a favourite white wine to try for me, it’s something a bit different and I like that. Their budget label is the “Preece” brand with wines in this range selling for about $10-$12. I also try the Mitchelton Heathcote Shiraz during the master-class that I will publish note on at the end of this series of 5 instalments.
“Airstrip” Marsanne Rousanne Viognier 2002 – Butter, honey and caramel aged characters. Good intensity on the palate and balanced with no one element sticking out. It is ready to drink now. 89/100
“Blackwood Park” Riesling 2005 – All light citrus on the nose and acid on the palate at the moment. Needs at least a few years to settle down and will probably be drinking really well in about 5-6 years. 87/100
“Preece” Sparkling NV – Cheesy, yeasty nose. Palate is slightly short and bitter. 86/100
“Preece” Chardonnay 2005 – Fresh tropical fruit nose and a faultless palate but it is too simple to provide interest. 85/100
“Preece” Sauvignon Blanc 2005 – Freshly cut grass and mixed herbs. Once again, no major faults besides being boring. 85/100
Viognier 2004 – Restrained aromas of spice and musk. Palate lacks intensity and finishes bland and short. 82/100
