Moorooduc Estate (Mornington Peninsula) – A bit of a revelation for me at last years show as I had not heard of them before and they were making some very smart Pinot and Chardonnay.
“The Moorooduc” Pinot Noir 2004 – The most complexity and depth of the Moorooduc Pinots tried. Really tight and closed at the moment, but you can just feel the class and the structure that is just waiting for an opportunity to show itself. 89/100
“The Moorooduc” Chardonnay 2003 – A similar story to the Reserve Pinot above. This has more complexity and better aging potential than the other Chardonnays from this winery. Really nice length and a lingering finish. 88/100
Pinot Gris 2005 – Intense oily and spicy nose. Mouth-feel is similarly intense and the wine is only let down by a lack of focus. 87/100
Pinot Noir 2004 – Alright, but doesn’t do anything to stand out from the crowd. It may develop some complexity and interest with some time as it seems like it has some structure behind the fruit. 87/100
“Devil’s Bend Creek” Chardonnay 2004 – Fairly light nose of fresh fruit. Has a bit of tang to the palate but lacks points of interest. 86/100
“Devil’s Bend Creek” Pinot Noir 2004 – In summary – too simple. Pinot lovers are pretty demanding and this just doesn’t have enough depth to hold any interest. Well made but in an easy and early drinking style. 86/100
Chardonnay 2003 – Signs of spicy, slightly toasty oak on the nose. An overly acidic palate ruins it. 85/100
