Poor attendance at the Sydney Good Living Wine Show late last month meant that the master classes that were going to cost from $25 to $75 were opened to those who did attend, at no charge. I went to this Champagne tasting, the Shiraz class led by Huon Hooke and a tasting by Buller of […]

The third and final workshop on the second day of the Frankland Estate International Riesling Tasting in Sydney. This workshop focused on Riesling from the new and old world, in an off-dry style. Dry River “Craighall” 2004 Slightly less pungent nose than the 2005 I tried the previous day, but still had some sweaty, funky […]

This was an very good master class with the interesting and charismatic Ernst Loosen. This was the second of three master classes on day two of the Frankland Estate International Riesling Tasting. First up was a wine that is part of a joint venture between Chateau Ste. Michelle in the USA and Ernst Loosen that […]

This was the first of three workshops that were held earlier this year at the 2006 Frankland Estate International Riesling Tasting in Sydney. These notes were going to be posted on another website that I’ve been working on, but due to the dearth of posts here, they have found a new home! These wines were […]

Becks & Posh is the host for Wine Blogging Wednesday #25 with the theme of Champagne, with an emphasis on some of the smaller producers in the region as well as a suggestion to attempt to pair the selected Champagne with food. Willow Creek “Tulum” Pinot Noir 2004 – (Mornington Peninsula, Victoria): Ah, I’ve wandered into the Shiraz tutorial by mistake. No? […]

Wine Australia, the biennial exhibition of Australian wine and wine related products has come and gone and after four days of tasting over 400 wines, I’m taking a little break from drinking for a few weeks! Overall, I thought the event was excellent – although there is still some room for improvement. I’m going to […]

Wine Australia is this coming weekend in Sydney and with hundreds of exhibitors, even those of us who are going on all four days will probably not get to see all the producers on show. With that in mind, here are ten producers that caught my eye and that I think are worth taking a […]

Some very good news from Anthony at the Melbourne wine retailer Boccaccio Cellars is that Charles Melton will be using screwcaps on all his non-sparkling wine from the 2004 vintage wines onward, including the reasonably expensive “Nine Popes”. Hopefully it won’t be long before natural cork sealed Australian wines are in the vast minority.

An interesting article by wine writer Max Allen in this month’s Gourmet Traveller magazine where he subjects himself to an informal experiment regarding the effects of drinking 19 standard drinks worth of expensive wines and cheap wines on him the morning after. The two nights were a week apart, and Max had the same meal […]
